Winter Nap

Just a quick note to say that this website is better designed to view on your desk or laptop.

I’ve been interested in interiors lately taking inspiration from 19th and early 20th century Scandinavian artists, and as in The Yellow Sweater, (not an interior painting) this one took some unexpected twists and turns. After my initial drawings and a start to this painting I changed my mind about the whole thing. The composition behind the original story was not as compelling as I had envisioned. Luckily pastel is a forgiving medium so I  painted out the parts that did not serve my intentions  and did some redesigning.

I paint at least one fox a year, sometimes more - not necessarily by design - but when they or any other motif/symbol/object appears in my mind, I always recognize it and count on my intuition to lead my artistic direction… and so the fox  appeared.

I used a combination of pastel pencil for fine lines and details of the fox, hard pastel for just about everything except the white of the bedspread, which I imagined like a cloud, and some pops of color on the headboard and rug. A lot of blending across all three!

You can see more of my fox paintings here.
