Incoming Storm, 9 inches by 12 inches, pastel on paper

My work this summer has been heavily influenced by the environment, specifically the East Coast’s unbearably hot summer. I spent most of it inside and focused on painting simple things at home, like produce from the farm stand, things I’ve collected or carried with me over the years, and a couple of memories from Maine, where it’s always cooler.  I was working on several paintings at once, all of which I felt needed a tight hand so it was a relief to loosen up with this one, executed mostly in soft pastels, rare for me. The subject, the boardwalk at the end of a late summer day, frazzled in the light of an incoming storm demanded  a looser hand.
