Horizon Line

Horizon Line, 12 inches by 5.5 inches, pastel on paper (click to see larger image.)

This is another painting completed primarily using soft pastels. Generally I like to use them only at the end to highlight because I like the layered effect I can achieve with harder pastels. Sometimes though, I can’t resist to dive right in because often the color selection of my soft pastels is richer and closer to what I am looking for. The effect is totally different, more loose; impressionistic and wild - but I thought it suited this path to the beach scene on an unmistakably September day, and maybe my mood. I have to change up ways of using pastel to keep things fresh and I often find that by experimenting I make my most exciting breakthroughs.
