Rabbit, Run!
January 20, 2025Click image to see it larger. A snowy scene of Newcastle, Maine, Rabbit, Run! is about 2 - 4 times bigger than my usual work. Working large has its advantages because you can get in more detail especially when most of your tools don’t come with fine points. The disadvantage is one of practicality. Large enough supports to hold big works in progress and safe storage for the final painting are not easily accommodated in a small space.
I started this one small, 9 inches by 12 inches, imagining an intimate scene - I am a fan of smaller works that can convey this sense, but once I got started too many elements called out for more space, the clouds and expanse of the field - and I needed to be able to get in the forms of the rabbit. One look at the 12 inch by 16 inch sheet told me that I still needed more room so I went with the 20 inches by 25 inches. Now all I have to do is wrap it and find a safe, flat place to store it…
